New Hire Orientation
Successful orientations and onboarding processes are more than the typical first-day HR administrative run-throughs or sitting new employees in front of a video monitor in a back room. Organizations need to get people off on the right foot by informing them, involving them, and inspiring them to hit the ground running.
Healthcare / Pharmaceutical
TAP Pharmaceutical Products Inc.
Client Need: In addition to conducting essential administrative tasks — completing required employment forms, reviewing benefits and resources, and introducing the facility and related safety and security procedures —, TAP recognized the need to:
- Introduce employees to their new and unique work environment
- Foster a feeling that employees are special and their contribution is important
- Excite employees about the career decision they’ve made
- Encourage employees to make the most of their opportunities with TAP
Solution: We developed a one-day instructor-led program called “Where You Want to Be.” The program uses the theme of a journey to chart where TAP has been, where they are, where they want to go — both as individuals and as a company —, and how to get there, together.
Travel, Hospitality & Tourism
Celebrity Cruises
Client Need: The company was revamping its new hire orientation and was looking to build an exciting, interactive and motivational program that offered new family members an opportunity to gain knowledge about the Company, including its vision and values, key information, the work environment, and Celebrity’s approach to customer service. Special design considerations included:
- New family members come from diverse backgrounds and cultures around the world. Perspectives, customs and proficiency in English (verbal and written) vary widely.
- The crew is fully engaged from day one, and this program needed to be flexible and modularized so it can be delivered in short sessions over time based on facilitator and participant availability.
- Sessions may include one or more participants. Celebrity has nine ships with typically 7 to 10 “sign-ons” per ship working a four-month rotation, and these new family members may need to attend orientation sessions at different times.
- Some new family members have experience in their jobs and in the cruise industry; some do not. In addition, participants come from eight different job families and various position levels within Celebrity.
Solution: We developed three orientation sessions scheduled for two hours each. The sessions can be delivered on a flexible schedule over several weeks. Session 1 introduces participants to essential aspects of work and off-work ship life. Session 2 covers Celebrity’s core service model with the help of a high-production video produced by us for this program. Session 3 discusses some of the specific challenges and successes participants experience in their work and off-work life onboard the ship.
